The article presents the results of two experimental studies in which I investigated the effect of the situational context and action vs. state orientation on perseverance and efficacy in task performance. The results of Study 1 confirmed that in a context which supports autonomy - as opposed to one which induces external control - people are much more likely to be not only more persistent and effective in their actions but also much more interested in the performed task. Interest in (...) the performed task seems to also be - to some extent- a mediator in the relationship between persistence and efficacy. The results of Study 2 confirmed that a context, which supports autonomy positively, affects both persistence and efficacy. At the same time, the study shows that in a context, which supports autonomy, action-oriented people are more persistent and efficient in their actions than are state-oriented people. What is more, in an autonomy-supporting context, action-oriented people have a more positive attitude towards a given task than do state-oriented people. (shrink)

BackgroundNew metrics have been developed to assess the impact of research and provide an indication of online media attention and data dissemination. We aimed to describe online media attention of articles evaluating cancer treatments and identify the factors associated with high online media attention.MethodsWe systematically searched MEDLINE via PubMed on March 1, 2015 for articles published during the first 6 months of 2014 in oncology and medical journals with a diverse range of impact factors, from 3.9 to 54.4, and selected (...) a sample of articles evaluating a cancer treatment regardless of study design. Altmetric Explorer was used to identify online media attention of selected articles. The primary outcome was media attention an article received online as measured by Altmetric score (i.e., number of mentions in online news outlets, science blogs and social media). Regression analysis was performed to investigate the factors associated with high media attention, and regression coefficients represent the logarithm of ratio of mean (RoM) values of Altmetric score per unit change in the covariate.ResultsAmong 792 articles, 218 (27.5%) received no online media attention (Altmetric score = 0). The median [Q1–Q3] Altmetric score was 2.0 [0.0–8.0], range 0.0–428.0. On multivariate analysis, factors associated with high Altmetric score were presence of a press release (RoM = 10.14, 95%CI [4.91–20.96]), open access to the article (RoM = 1.48, 95%CI [1.02–2.16]), and journal impact factor (RoM = 1.10, 95%CI [1.07–1.12]. As compared with observational studies, systematic reviews were not associated with high Altmetric score (RoM = 1.46, 95%CI [0.74–2.86]; P = 0.27), nor were RCTs (RoM = 0.65, 95%CI [0.41–1.02]; P = 0.059) and phase I/ii non-RCTs (RoM = 0.58, 95%CI [0.33–1.05]; P = 0.07). The articles with abstract conclusions favouring study treatments were not associated with high Altmetric score (RoM = 0.97, 95%CI [0.60–1.58]; P = 0.91).ConclusionsMost important factors associated with high online media attention were the presence of a press release and the journal impact factor. There was no evidence that study design with high level of evidence and type of abstract conclusion were associated with high online media attention. (shrink)

Guizot aprendió el oficio de historiador preparando con su esposa,Pauline de Meulan, una edición crítica en francés de _Decline and Fall_ de Gibbon. Las personalidades históricas de Gibbon y Guizot fueron muy distintas. También sus respectivos “estilos de historia”. Pero en las obras de Guizot, en especial en su _Historia de la civilización en Europa_, es reconocible el legado de Gibbon. Así, en la eliminación de la barrera entre historia civil y historia religiosa, en la amplitud temática, en la ambición (...) cronológica y en una idea de Europa concebida como algo más que la suma de sus partes. Asimismo en la adopción de la misma palabra _civilización_ y en el hecho de que la interpretación guizotiana de la historia europea hunda sus raíces en tres factores presentes en Gibbon: lo que sobrevivió de las instituciones romanas, el impacto del cristianismo y el aporte germánico. Celem podjętych rozważań jest ustalenie cech charakterystycznych badań filozofii polskiej prowadzonych przez o. Romana Darowskiego SJ (1935– 2017). Głównym materiałem źródłowym są jego publikacje oraz ich recenzje. Literatura przedmiotowa jest nieliczna. Przy powyższym zadaniu naturalnym sposobem postępowania (metodą) wydaje się prześledzenie informacji biograficznych i publikacji autora, by na podstawie uzyskanego zarysu twórczości ustalić właściwe jej cechy oraz sformułować narzucające się uwagi. Artykuł zawiera przegląd najważniejszych prac Romana Darowskiego dotyczących filozofii polskiej. Zachowuje układ chronologiczny, z niewielkimi odstępstwami. Informacje biograficzne (...) wskazywały czas i okoliczności powstania niektórych omawianych tekstów. Poczynione ustalenia potwierdzają tezę o wybitnych osiągnięciach Romana Darowskiego w badaniu historii filozofii polskich jezuitów od XVI do XX stulecia. Dowodzą też, że wskazał i udokumentował on w licznych publikacjach najważniejsze dokonania jezuitów pracujących na ziemiach leżących w granicach dawnej Rzeczypospolitej. Ponadto przez lata aktywności zawodowej wypracował i zastosował z powodzeniem oryginalne metody i program badawczy, a także nakreślił kierunki działań na przyszłość. (shrink)

Roman Ingarden, opisując rzeczywistość moralną, posługiwał się językiem wartości. Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia opis wartości moralnych i analizę terminologii stosowanej do ich charakterystyki i wyjaśniania sposobu ich istnienia. Istotne znaczenie dla teorii wartości moralnych ma doświadczenie powinności i problematyka normatywności. Zbadanie obu zagadnień prowadzi do pytań o sposób powstawania nowych klas wartości moralnych i rozpoznawania powinności do ich realizacji. Przeprowadzone badania pokazują także trudności związane ze stosowaniem języka wartości w komunikacji zagadnień moralnych.

The article concentrates on motifs and ideas of biblical origin in the post-war literary output of Roman Brandstaetter, presented at different textual levels. The author of the paper considers motifs which are the most frequent and significant for writer’s artistic visage, like the prodigal son, the sacrifice of Isaac, the fight against the angel, the abyss, the imitation of God, the incarnation. The aim is to describe the transformations of the motifs and the ideas, to trace them to their biblical (...) source, and to interpret their functions in the texts. Brandstaetter’s work is interpreted in the light of the Catholic theology, the Christian tradition (included mysticism) and the whole text of the Bible, both Old and New Testament. (shrink)

Przedstawiając najpierw rozumienie wartości w filozofii Romana Ingardena, a następnie przywołując przykładowe sformułowania moralizmu w odniesieniu do muzyki (autorstwa Rogera Scrutona, Platona i Petera Kivy’ego), autorka pyta, czy możemy uważać dzieło muzyczne za nośnik wartości moralnych. Następnie badając, w jaki inny sposób dzieło muzyczne może być związane z wartościami moralnymi, autorka dochodzi do wniosku, że relacje między wartościami moralnymi a dziełem muzycznym należą do stosunków subtelnych i być może tym, (...) co zawdzięczamy dziełom muzycznym jest umiejętność słuchania. In the philosophical works of Roman Ingarden ethical questions appear in different contexts and are differently approached, namely: 1) strictly ethical questions considering the nature of moral values, qualities of moral act, etc.: 2) ethical questions implied by the general theory of value, i.e. the mode of existence of moral values, their formal structure, etc.; 3) ontological foundations of ethics, i.e. determinism vs. indeterminism in the realm of real world, etc.; 4) investigations in philosophical anthropology connected with ethical questions, i.e. (...) the structure of person, the problem of responsibility, etc. (shrink)

In this well-known passage of his Antiquitates Romanae, Dionysius of Halicarnassus describes how Romulus and his companions seized and married the Sabine virgins. Romulus justifies his actions by stating that this method of acquiring wives was a Greek custom:Dionysius' report of a Greek tradition adopted by Romulus is rather enigmatic. It has previously been noted that this passage bears similarity to passages of Plutarch and in particular his description of the Spartan marriage ceremony. This Spartan marriage ceremony does bear some (...) relation to the situation being described by Dionysius in that the women are captured before being married, but other elements of the ceremony—the bride having her hair cut off and being taken in a darkened room—are quite out of place here and would appear to be a peculiarly Spartan tradition. As Plutarch was writing some time after Dionysius, it is not possible for Dionysius to be making a parallel with the ceremony as decribed by Plutarch, but he may have had access to a common source about that ceremony, now lost. However, I would like to suggest that there is another well-known source which may have been the source of the Greek tradition referred to in Dionysius 2.30 that is connected to neither Plutarch nor marriage.
